Should You Change Your Job or Career?
For success, regularly evaluate whether your job is: 1) Satisfying you, and 2) Taking you where you wish to go. In thinking about that, ask yourself these questions:
- Are you continuing to learn?
- Are you challenged and enjoying what you’re doing?
- Are you free to innovate and create new solutions?
- Are you getting rewarded as you deserve?
If you answer less than 3 of these as "yes," then it’s probably time to find a role that fits you better and excites you more.
Also consider your satisfaction with the person you report to. Here are ways to rate your boss:
- The Hearing Test. Beware if they don’t listen well, you won’t enjoy being with them as they underperform. Do they listen well?
- Does your boss authentically want to help customers? To make their experience better? Customers create your success. If the Boss wants want to help customers, they’ll be good with employees.
- Are they likeable? If so, they have a better chance of being effective leaders. I once toured a company in Texas where people at desks actually put their heads down when they saw the boss coming!
- Do they hire people better than him or herself (like you!)? If so, they win.
- Can they criticize their own performance? None of us are perfect. People that recognize their mistakes openly are far more successful.
- Does your manager like playing on a team? Do they respect the work of the lowest paid person on their team?
- Do you enjoy working on this person’s team? Is it closer to fun, or difficulty?
If your boss gets less than 5 "Yes" answers from you on these measures, it’s time for you to find better opportunities.
